Students will learn the basics of machine operation, essential sewing techniques and garment construction. Instruction will cover how to sew plain, french and welt seams, how to sew tapered and fisheye darts, and how to set a lapped zipper. Using a commercial pattern, students will learn how to complete a simple project provided by the school. Intermediate instruction may cover zippers, buttonholes, yokes, facings, bias techniques, collars, cuffs, pockets, and tailoring to fit. Students will construct a project of their choice based on skill level.

Students will learn how to tailor and adjust garments to their body shape. Instructional assistance includes garment alteration, tailoring, and repair work. Students are asked to bring in a garment or project that needs attention in altering, tailoring, or repair that can be accomplished in the allotted time frame. Basic sewing skills required.

Students will learn how to modify a pair of denim jeans into barrel jeans. Instruction covers basic machine operation, jean deconstruction, setting a gusset, serging and top stitching. Students are asked to bring in two pre-washed pairs of jeans with little to no stretch.

Students will learn how to sew a variety of hand sewing techniques. Instruction will cover how to sew a catch stitch, slip stitch, and how to sew a flat and shank button. Time permitting, Instruction will cover how to hand sew a bespoke button hole. Skill Level: Beginner/Intermediate

Please note that we require a minimum amount of student participation to offer each class. You will be contacted a week prior to class beginning to state whether the class will be moving forward or canceled. Should the class be canceled due to low enrollment, you will be notified a week in advance and will be offered the option to attend another class, offered a student credit, or a refund.

Hemming & Finishing Workshop

Students will learn how to measure, mark, cut, and sew hems with machine and by hand. Instruction will cover techniques for hemming specific fabrics and proper hem finishing for each garment and fabric. Students are asked to bring in a garment that requires hemming that can be accomplished in the allotted time frame.

Using the basic bodice sloper, instruction will cover how to incorporate dart manipulation, style lines, added fullness, yokes and pleat tucks to transform the basic bodice.

Students will learn the history of the overlock/serger, how to thread, adjust tension and operate their serger. Students are asked to bring in their serger & user manual.
